apt-get wants to remove my kernel

I'm using Debian 3.1 Sarge. I tried using apt-get to install a couple of games but it list my kernel-image file to be removed. I aborted and looked at my /etc/apt/sources.list file and everything looks normal.

    #deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

    deb ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ stable main
    deb-src ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ stable main
    #deb ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ stable contrib
    #deb-src ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ stable contrib

deb Debian -- Security Information stable/updates main

Any idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks!

    Hi
Debian mirror are allways being updated with programs and programs are updated as well. If the kernel-image is to be removed its because the program you are getting has dependances that require the kernel-image to be upgraded. The current debian stable is 4.0 as of April 8th, 2007.

I looked in the GUI version Synaptic Package Manager and my kernel is up to date
kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686 version 2.6.8-16sarge6. It doesn't want to update it, it just wants to remove it. If I were to install a package that removed my kernel, could I just re-install the recently removed kernel with no harm done?

Apt-get will remove the old kernel-image and replace it with the current kernel-image

    You're using etch(stable) repos with sarge(oldstable).

Either upgrade your system or change your repos.

PS: ...and no, you shouldn't allow apt to fully remove any kernel image (unless it's the same version number)...
