I had a problem with the 2.6.21 kernel in the sid repositories, there is a known bug that the nvidia driver won't compile because of a paravirtualization setting in the config.
I just rolled my own kernel with my own patches and no problem.

Just because you use a distribution, doesn't mean everyone uses the same one.
There is no need to login to the GUI as root!
