"name that error!"
Greetings All.
This is my first post in these forums as a new Linux user, and long-time windows user. Obviously i am most likely way over my head in this problem, but so far, my efforts have resulted in successes.
Using Debian 4.0 Etch amd64, everything standard has been pretty smooth, with the exception of learning a new command line interface.
On to the interesting part.
I managed to get my own WINE compiled (since there wasn't a readily available package for my build), and managed to install my largest time-sink of the last 18 months, Anarchy Online.
For the 30-45 minutes i was logged into the game, all was great/good/fine/perfect (as perfect as it ever was on my XP system, with the same hardware).
And then i fiddled with the in-game options menu... no immediate problems, so i'm assuming that wasn't the problem... but after those first 30-45 minutes, i had a crash. Apparently total system crash... or maybe it froze... or maybe i was impatient... but nothing worked, i couldn't do anything at all but watch a frozen screen. So i had no choice but to power down.
When i rebooted, i could no longer run the game (wine Game.exe).
here is the error i have:
Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.

I've been googling for a few hours now with zero luck, and not a single step closer to understanding this problem, so any help or suggestions would be welcome.

Hi - what kind of video card are you using? Do you know your frames per second (FPS)?
I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso

update: i found an answer somewhere... didn't mark it, but the problem was i was trying to save my nvidia settings w/out being in root. Apparently the game wouldn't run unless the game settings match the nvidia settings... ?
going root and typeing "nvidia-settings" enabled me to save my Xconfig, and wine Anarchy is working again.
Another issue, is that my X mouse cursor is visible on top of my in-game mouse cursor... it's not terrible, but it's rather annoying.
and to answer fingal's question, i get ~60 fps in the "good" areas, and around 10-20 in crowded areas, with all the eye-candy enabled on 1440x900 res.
