I can't get the resolution changing shortcuts to work in most recent linux distributions. Knoppix can get [ Modes "1280x800" "800x600" "640x480" "640x400" ] working correctly after I play with 915resolution and /etc/X11/xorg.conf on my c301nr hp laptop. "640x400" gives a sharp magnifying effect at exactly half by half of lcd native resolution, highly recommended as a feature of all default installs. Knoppix just got wiped out again [is there a bugfix to 5.11, it keeps getting trashed!] and Sabayon can get all but "640x400" now. Sidux, which I'd prefer as a primary, gets 1280x800 only. Tried fiddling with boot options on the grub menu.lst on the hd too.

Help, I'm trapped in Sabayon 3.26 - last distro to setup my vid right.

I prefer apt-get but final polish makes the real difference in a distro. I hate the emerge system in my Sabayon326 but nothing newer lets me manipulate 915resolution and xorg.conf to get 640x400 plus my laptop's native resolution via [ctrl][alt][+]. I got used to using [ctrl][alt][+] 5 yrs. ago on linux and absolutely expect useful sets of screen modes accessible this way. No luck with Skolelinux beyond 1280x800 native LCD. Even tried to fix up live Mepis "6.5.0.32" despite the risks of 'buntu family hates multi - booting syndrome' wiping out every distro on drive.

From my understanding [ctrl]+[alt]+[+] only works if those resolutions are present and working in xorg.conf. Basically it switches between resolutions but it does not redefine or scan for lower/higher settings. You would need to have the settings already defined. I would suggest taking a copy of the xorg.conf from Knoppix and using it with other distro.

Excellent Idea, thats how I got it right in Sabayon326

The xorg.conf from Knoppix511 includes the modelines for 640x400 and many others. Transplanting it does wonders when the distro gets extra vid modes but didn't get native 1280x800 right. When the distro gets 1280x800 right I can't seem to get extra modes no matter what I do with X11 stuff and 915resolution [often needed on intel chipset laptops ] .
