If I do "iwconfig eth1 mode monitor", within 30 seconds, the mode changes back to managed. Why? What is affecting this change? I run kde....

how does debian manage wireless?

are you running any network managers? is so, just disable it

I usually run knetworkmanager, but it does not automatically start on boot-up, so it should not be interfering. What else might be trying to mess with wireless settings?
