glxgears freezes computer
Hi,
So far I've posted on the official Debian forums a few weeks ago, NVNews.net days ago, and now I'm posting here; Hopefully I can resolve the following issue.
First, I tried installing the somewhat outdated (I didn't think they are, according to a nvidia technician the ones on the Etch repository are no longer supported) nvidia drivers on the default 2.6.18-4 kernel that Etch installed. On reboot nVidia logo showed up and direct rendering was enabled. I was able to play some OpenGL games with no problem. So then I figured I'd run glxgears to test and the glxgears window outputs black, I can't input keys, and have to shut down by the power switch. I should also note I tried a couple more gfx intensive opengl games after that and they would only display the intro partially, then debian freezes.
Second, after recieving some advice from a nvidia technician on NVNews,
I installed the latest nvidia driver and updated my kernel to 2.6.21-3. Now direct rendering still enabled with no errors from 'glxinfo |grep direct' and newer nVidia logo shows up before the login screen; Unfortunalely the same problem is still occuring with glxgears freezing debian. For what it's worth I tried MEPIS to test with the same drivers - DRI working there as well - except an identical error occured with glxgears freezing everything except some mouse movement.
The gfx chipset is onboard nVidia 6150 LE. I even did one last thing which was go into the BIOS, switch 'Graphics Card' which was set on 'PCI' to 'Onboard' and that didn't change anything either.
Thank you for any helpful notions,
shining from dapcentral.org
