    Screen Resolution problem


    I have a nividia Ti 4600 and a Gateway FPD1810 monitor running on Debian. The monitor supports 1280x1024, but i am only able to choose 1280x960. The 1280x1024 mode is listed in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Any suggestions? The only thing i could think of was maybe it was because it found the monitor only as a "Generic Monitor" instead of the exact brand. But i set the horizontal and vertical refresh rates based on the manual. Any thing I can do about this? Thanks

    It's might be the sync frequencies. If you post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log, we'll be able to diagnose it further.

    The three repetitions are probably three different sync combinations that could synthesize 1280x1024, and apparently they all failed.

    That seems extremely weird - I wonder if they haven't made a typo or something. The standard 1280x1024 modes usually require at least 64 kHz horizontal syncing, and 31-61 sounds extremely restrictive in general.
    Either they must have made a typo, or you're supposed to make a home-brew mode specification, which seems extremely unlikely.

    Let's try two things:
    1. Remove the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines completely and let the X server try to probe the frequencies over DDC instead. If that doesn't help, restore the lines and go to step 2.
    2. Try setting the HorizSync to something like 30-69 instead (that's a pretty standard spec). If you've heard all those warning about monitors breaking by driving them outside of their normal specs, don't worry: that doesn't apply to LCD monitors, since they are digitally synced. It doesn't apply to modern CRT monitors either.

    It worked(!), using number 1.
    It didn't write anything to the XF86Config file though. So does that mean it is just going to have to redetect the frequency every boot?... I guess it doesn't matter.

    No, that certainly doesn't matter. It's meant to be done that way. The way it works is that newer (well... newer... post-95?) monitors have a little I2C serial EEPROM directly connected by the VGA cable to the computer, that the video card can probe. It's not awkward or anything, it's really meant to be that way.

    However, sometimes these chips lie (that is, when the manufacturer has made a mistake), and that's not all too uncommon. That's why there's still the option to enter the frequencies manually.

    i have been having a similar issue except i can't get higher then 1152x864 and in windows i run at 1280x1024... i will try what you have suggested in here and see how it goes
