    monitor not recognized

    I have a compaq pavilion system. My monitor is an XGA TFT active matrix display given along with compaq. I am not able to start X windows because, my monitor is not at all there in the list of drivers.
    Recently I tried to download some driver and run it again. This time it flickers back and forth from text to GUI mode a couple of times and then stops with the text mode runing perfectly.
    Can anyone help me out.

    Are you running off on-board graphics or a graphics card?
