    graphics card drivers


    Hey all, I seem to be unable to get the correct graphics card drivers to be used. I have an ATI x1300. I'm going to give you the ouput of a few commands and files, so you can understand what is going on. I'm trying to get the fglrx drivers to work, but my window system keeps using mesa3d:

    I've tried using the info from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI but I get an error that fglrx.ko already exists.

    I've tried to go into the Restricted Drivers in ubuntu administration, but it said i was already using the restricted drivers. I really don't know what else to do.

    What I'm really trying to do is use wine. It was working when i was using the proprietary drivers, but now everything I run that uses graphics doesn't work. I believe this to be because I installed compiz fusion and emerald and open source drivers were installed. I really want to be able to have window animations and be able to use wine, so I'm hoping there is a way to go between drivers whenever I want.

    I doubt I can help with the thread (other than suggesting crapping out the ati card and bying an nvidia), but I can help with that question: the X logs are saved completely into /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    If you are using many sessions additional files are created with an increased number for each session (Xorg.1.log, Xorg.2.log and so on). The complete init log for X (even if it fails to init at all) will be saved there.

    This is when I really don't know what to do. Is no one answering my post because no one knows the answer? And if no one knows the answer, is there at least somewhere I can be pointed to help me figure out how to fix this?

    I would like to be able to answer, but I can't. Maybe your video card is not supported by the driver. As I said above, I'd just advise you to buy an nVidia card, which should *just work*. That might not be an option for you... but it's the only advise I can give you.

    seems your card is supported, you could try to install this from ATI website with maybe more luck ATI Catalyst™ 8.5 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver
