[SOLVED] Need help accessing root and enabling GUI

I'm pretty new to Linux. I recently installed a somewhat older version of GNU (gNewSense) Linux on an old win98 system I have so I've been studying for about 2-3 weeks now. I've been using the GUI the whole time and earlier tonight found out that pressing CTRL + ALT + F3 takes you out of GUI mode and into plain text mode. My issue is that I want to get back into GUI mode, but I don't know how. I've read a few topics on this site so I got a few commands, but they didn't work for me. I tried CTRL + ALT + F1, which failed then the command "startx", but it said I need to be root to use the command. I then tried both "su" and "su -" commands, but when it asked for the root login info, I can't give it anything cause I never set anything for root and if I did, I don't remember what I put. I only know I put in login info for my personal account. So, at this point, I'm stuck in text mode with Linux and it won't let me reboot, shutdown or bring up GUI without being root. Does anyone know how I can gain access to the root account? Maybe default login info that I'm not aware of? And any commands to enable GUI again? Maybe something that doesn't require root priviledges if I'm unable to access root? Also, for those who are wondering, I'm the only user on the Linux system. Thanks to all who answer.

    Hi and Welcome !

    Press Alt+Ctrl+F7.

F1 to F6 are for command line and F7 is for GUI. You dont have to have root privileges for that. Just press relevant combination.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
