    I setup linux in my install to boot to text....i can type startx and have it work, that's fine..but I want to be able to choose between GNOME and other desktops that i install like Ximian XD2 or xfce how do I do this

    whitch distro are you using, and whitch desktops do you have installed? also, post the contents of

    ~/.xinitrd

    login screen

    I am running RedHat 9 and that file does not exist.

    I only have GNOME now but will have xfce shortly for sure

    I think that redhat offers tools integrated into its Gnome GUI for setting the defaults for an X start. Sorry, I don't know the Red Hat system very well and cannot offer much beyond that.
