    Which distro are you using?
    For Ubuntu, press Alt+Ctrl+F3. It will switch to tty3. Login there and execute this
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
    It will install missing libraries.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
    Or use RHEL's default package manager, up2date to install it.
