Is there any way in Gnome to stop drives mounted at boot time appearing on the desktop?
If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

OK, found something good enough. It turns off all volumes on the desktop!
Press Alt + F2 and enter "gconf-editor" without the quotes and press enter.
Navigate to Apps -> Nautilus -> Desktop
Select or deselect the appropriate options. (I turned off volumes_visible)
