If you want a desktop, why not install the regular desktop version of Ubuntu on the machine?
That being said, you might be able to get the usual GNOME desktop with apt-get install ubuntu-desktop.Registered Linux user #270181

I agree with techieMoe. Full Gnome is a better choice for new users (I assume you are, since you find the instructions on the wiki difficult).
But first of all, do you use your PC as a server?
Ubuntu Desktop Edition is practically the same as the server and comes with Gnome and many useful programs pre-installed.
If you still want Server+awesome, then type this:
Code:sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install awesome

The arch wiki has a lot of good info on awesome. It's fairly popular among arch users.
Awesome3 - ArchWiki
Ignore the info on installation, of course, as that is arch specific.
