X not giving me anything more than 800x600

    Hi.

I've tried 2 Linux distributions (Debian 5.0.4 and Ubuntu 10.04) on an Apple PowerMac G4 machine, and I can't get more than 800x600 on the X using the default configurations and don't know how to make it work.

I can't seem to post the Xorg log file because the dang anti-spam filter thinks it contains URLs (even if I remove all genuine URLs). But here's one section with some of the errors:

I really don't know what to tell you but no one else has answered your inquiry so perhaps if I ask a few questions we can get this ball rolling for you. I'm presuming you are still running Ubuntu 10.04? Is this an ATI card you have? Have you enabled the "restricted" 3d Drivers in System → Administration → Hardware drivers?

    1. I presume it's ATI, "lspci" says it's a "Rage Pro 128".

    2. Would that work on a PowerPC machine?

You can try to manually set the resolution in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. After saving the changes you will need to log out and then back in to have the settings take effect.

try using Xorg -configure command to generate xorg.conf, works well most of the time

Go to the system drop menu in the upper left, then click on preferences, the fifth or sixth item will be the ati control center. Click on that then follow the step by step instructions.

Try that out and let us know how it works.
