    What happens when you ssh into the solaris box and start an xterm?
     $ xterm &
    Do you get a permission problem or does an xterm pop up on your RH box?

    I was a bit confused by your explanation at first. Remember, it is your RedHat box that is running the X server. All the programs you run on the solaris server connect to the X server running on your local RedHat system.
