install / access thru gui interface

I've red hat version 4.1.2-42, how I would seethe gui interface, when I logged in just get a command prompt and have to use that. So do I have to install a gui or is therea command to run..please advise

I have a similar environment and trying to access the machine thru GUI interface. I am not using the console but access it thru Putty.

I tried the command up2date , got message 'command not found'. can you help.
