What's the box on the screen in KDE?

I've used KDE last a while back, but I didn't get what the box on the screen when you 1st install it is, with the little thing that pops up to the right of it, with the "x" on top (when I click that the box goes away). But what IS it? Is it not part of the desktop?

    Thanks.

To make KDE work like a traditional desktop you can select (or create) a "folder view" activity. It will default to showing a folder called ~/Desktop

KDE uses Activities you can set up multiple Activities and group your folders dependent on relevant tasks. Then you simple select what Activity you want to work out of.
