    No, the operating system remains functional; the user is dropped to the system login screen (GDM?).

    /var/crash does not exist.

    Code:
    # tail --lines 200 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    There is no “graphics card”; this box uses Intel on chip graphics:

    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
    CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX80637i33220

    I'm not sure what to make of the Xorg log, if anything.

    Unless it's earlier in the file there doesn't seem to be anything interesting there and you card should be able to manage gnome3. My guess, given the IO nature of the error message, the touch screen is the issue. Are the drivers up to date for it?

    The driver for the touchscreen is the X driver “evdev”. I'm assuming that the driver is up to date, but I don't know that for a fact.

    Somewhere in the bowels of the Linux kernel / X, there is a block of code that looks essentially like this:

    Code:
    window_manager.request(Resource A);

    request(resource) {
    	if (resource not available) {
    		log("Resource temporarily unavailable”);
    		return false;
    	}
    	REST OF CODE
    }
    This block needs to be changed to something like:

    Code:
    window_manager.request(Resource A);

    request(resource) {
    	if (resource not available) {
    		log("A not available- SPECIFIC_REASON_WHY”);
    		return false;
    	}
    	REST OF CODE
    }
    Where “A” would be a human readable hardware resource.

    This wouldn't fix my problem, but it would be a great first step in that direction.

    I know what your saying but actually the XServer runs in user space - not kernel.

    You could check the Xorg logs for issues with evdev.

    Code:
    grep evdev /var/log/Xorg*
    grep EE /var/log/Xorg*
    I'd also take a look at the ELO linux drivers. They seem to have some prebuilt linux drivers.

    I'm afraid trouble shooting a problem like this often means a lot of digging around.

    I found this grepping for "EE" as you suggested:

    Code:
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:[444291.849] (EE) intel(0): Failed to submit batch buffer, expect rendering corruption or even a frozen display: No space left on device.
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:[444300.358] (EE) intel(0): Failed to submit batch buffer, expect rendering corruption or even a frozen display: No space left on device.
    So this is output from Xorg (X?)? What does mean by saying "No space left on device."?

    Below that output (same file, .old):

    Code:

    That's better. Certainly ugly enough to be the problem. Searching on "Failed to submit batch buffer, expect rendering corruption or even a frozen display: No space left on device." gives lots of results. I'd suggest rambling through them looking for one that seems to match yours closely - you might submit it as a bug if you can't find another place where it si submitted. Here's one bug submission that may match: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52496
