A status update:
First off, "xwmconfig" doesn't work. The command isn't recognized. But that's not an issue, since the current problem seems to involve my fonts, not booting into X.
On that note, I got around to downloading the new fontsconfig file (2.3.0), and attempted to install it. In order to run "./configure", I had to download the latest expat library, which I did. I then successfully ran "configure", and attempted to run "make".
I get this error when I run "make -q". This is only the output, not the exact error message, but unless someone can show me how to get it to print into a file ("make > ~/error" doesn't work, it only prints what happens before the error), I can't see all the error message, and it's too hard to copy). Anyway, here's the error message I see:
make: Entering directory `/home/alex/fontconfig-2.3.0'
Making all in font-config
Making all in fc-case
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: Leaving directory `/home/alex/fontconfig-2.3.0'
make: *** [all] Error 2
