I have a SoundMAX digital audio card, and i cant get gnome to play sounds.

Have you checked your mixer settings, so that your volume level isn't just turned down?

yea, the mixer volume is turned up on all channels

If you start a console and run "ps aux >/dev/dsp", do you get a scratchy sound?

Strange... do you have any unusual setup, like digital sound or anything? Is there anything special with this SoundMAX card?

yes, it is digital, i think.
It's a soundMAX Digital Audio, (might be integrated, im not sure)

Yeah, but do you have like a digital link to the speakers or anything? Is there anything in particular that is special with this sound card?
