How to play music on linux

Hi all,
This is my first message to the group, First of all i am a windows user now shifting to linux.
i have installed new linux 9.0 on my PC. I want to play songs, i am not getting XMMS can any one tell me how can i play songs

It would help if you could tell us which linux-distro and which filemanager you are using? (useally konqueror or nautilus since these come with kde/gnome)

I don't understand about not getting xmms. Is it installed and won't play anything or is it not installed at all? Again, which distro? 9.0 sounds like Suse?

If he's American then Linux 9.0 means Redhat for 90%

Anyway, the guy needs to fists start using Google, before he asks questions in the forums...

try downloading amarok - i have migrated from windows and amarok seems to me to be the best music player available. supports playlists and can edit tags and stuff. Don't know where to get it from - I use a debian based system (ubuntu) so i can apt-get. Try a goolge search for amarok.

I prefer beep-media-player over XMMS...

Welcome

Here is how I proceed to got music on a new computer under linux:
first I type in a console

lspci | grep audio

it gives me the audio controller of my pc:

Then I search on google the linux module to use for such a controller and finally I try to modprobe it (here it snd_via82xxx) if it does not work either it is compile into ur kernel (coz alsa which manage sound under linux is now into da kernel) either not compile and must be recompile a kernel (rare on a standard distro like mdk or suse).
In general it works and I got sound...

Has it ever occur to anyone who posted that this person doesn't even have the sound driver installed?

Try entering this code into the terminal interface.............

Code:

/dev/sndstat

It will allow you to test the sound and pick a driver for you're computer.

hi im having aproblem with my linux i can run amsn and listen to music i want to know where i can download the correct amsn and run it also i cnat listen to music even cd y ?pliz elp me to know where i can download music and listen to linux
