bash in an xterm? Other than that, I don't know one, except running mc in an xterm.

I was kind of guessing so...
Sorry, I don't know of one. Most file managers are made to integrate with some larger interface (eg. gnome, kde), for the sake of usability.

gmc is small and uses gtk alone. Also, I think eclipse has one, though I am not sure where. `xterm -e mc` might be your best bet

When I check gmc with ldd, it links to both libgnome and libgnomeui, so unless it's configurable at compile time, it uses gnome.

xfm and gentoo
try xfm (x file manager). its really simplistic and not too pretty. if you want something a little nicer try gentoo file manager. its got a few more features and neither one requires a certain window manager.
