    Xorg freezes randomly


    This problem is starting to drive me crazy. I have an Intel STL2 motherboard, Dual PIII 800 Mhz, 256 ECC Ram. The distro flavour is irrelevant, because i have observed the same behaviour under Fedora, Knoppix and Gentoo. I have used Xorg with KDE, Gnome and Xfce. And Knoppix comes with XFree86 for which I have tried KDE. After some time running, the GUI seems to freeze. The mouse moves... and I manage to switch text mode (CTRL+F1...) but when I switch back to the Window server I encounter a total system freeze. The system seems to work ok until I start X Windows. I have apache, mysql, and proftpd running on it no problem for days, until I start X Windows.

    Btw, I tried Fedora Core 3, Knoppix 4.0 and Gentoo 2004.3, 2005.0 and 2005.1. I have use both the onboard graphics chipset ...

    ... and a PCI video card (no AGP support)

    And I tried the VESA and nvidia drivers on the nvidia card.

    I suspected RAM issues, but memtest86 is and memtester are reporting everything as being fine.

    Any other ideas ??? I am totally clueless ... I am on the verge of succumbing to Windows for this machine!!

    Are you trying to run those 3 things + KDE?
    If so, you could try a lighter Desktop Environment such as Enlightenment. Or just go with a Window Manager such as Icewm or fluxbox.

    These 3 are not ram hogs like kde and gnome.

    Well, Xfce is not that much or a "ramdog" as KDE or Gnome. It's quite light.

    And even without any services started (Knoppix) it still crashes.

    So, it is just running X that crashes the machine?

    I am going to say I think it is X related.... cause Knoppix uses XFree ... and it still crashes. Definitely services running in the background don't seem to be an issue.

    To answer the other question, it does not crash at any one specific point. It just crashes at it's own free will wherever it pleases it. Which is really what is driving me most insane, because i just can't pinhead the problem.

    there are a few things you can do that will help.. when the problem first starts to occur check the xfree log in /var/log/ for any oddities. when you reboot the system (make sure you wait a substantial time for the lock to become total before rebooting) check the most recent x log.. then post all the output here. in the mean time you could try disabling likly culprits like graphical acceleration (comment dri and glx in x config before starting x)

    I've had this problem with FC3 a lot. It's fixed in FC4 though.
