ahh, that is a tough one, cause it is buried. If you are talking about the one on the login screen it is in the /etc/X11/gdm/Init/Default file if memory serves. But all that does is an "xsetroot #???" or something like that. To make the default background a picture you need some different xsetroot command, I just don't know what it is. man xsetroot might lead you in better directions.

hmm, seems like i can only use bitmap images only. that sucks. =\ ne way to use other pic formats?

Use xloadimage -onroot. That will allow you to take most image formats, I think.
