    What's exactly the error you get?

    You're using Xfree86 or Xorg?

    A look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or XFree86.0.log if you're using XFree) will tell you basically what's going wrong. Look for lines that start with (EE), those are errors and will make the server fail. (WW) warnings are normally not fatal.
    Stand up and be counted as a Linux user!
