are you wanting to boot to text mode or just get to a console while X is running?? also, could you try to be a little more clear in the questions you ask? it helps us to help you if you can be as clear and concise as possible.

Log in as root in an x-terminal and modify the file /etc/inittab
Change the line: id:5:initdefault: to read id:3:initdefault:
