well if you are talking about desktop enviroments,there is a file Xclients-default
or Xclients in your home directory.
The content of the file gives the desktop you are using,switchdesk can be used to change the desktop.

- 06-29-2006 #3It should be rather obvious. Do you see a "K" Menu at the bottom? If not you're probably running Gnome.

I'm reading this question as asking about whether KDM, GDM, or XDM is running, rather than which DE is in use. If that's the case, run
and it should return which of the three is running (if any).Code:$ ps -e | grep dm

Would you be able to get us a screenshot or picture of what you'd like us to identify, otherwise there's usually a 'about' button somehwere that will tell you what software it is and what version.
