Making your own theme
My friend and I want to make our own GUI for linux, as kind of a work in progress project for fun, and I would like to know if there was a way to customize the current desktop enviroments in such a way that we could, in fact, create our own specialized GUI for ourselves. Of course, we'll put it online, as with the GNU Public Liscense Agreement, but we would like to know how intensive this project would be (we are both accomplished programmers) and where to start.
Thanks

By GUI, do you mean a window manager? If you do, let me know; I would love to help. I've been doing Xlib programming for a while now, and have been tossing the idea of creating a window manager around in my head for quite some time.
