can't get GUI
I have a compaq presario laptop with 256 mb ram, widescreen display and 40 gb hdd, out of which 5 gb i've kept aside for linux. I tried installing 4 different flavours, starting with suse followed by Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Red hat 8. In each case i had some problem or other with the GUI. in suse it failed to start altogether(though inworkd fine on my desktop), in ubuntu and kubuntu kde and gnome started but with a res of only 640 x 800, in red hat again it failed to start altogether. It boots in text mode alright but gui has issues. Is it a hardware incompatibility??

Hi !!!
sometimes graphics create problems... set BIOS to use on-board graphics/ video device.........
.... casper ....It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
