    Nvidia driver problems

Having recently been introduced to Ubuntu (Dapper) I would now like to get my video card functioning correctly. This is an GeForce4 MX4000 AGP 8x and I hav downloaded and installed the official driver but following enabling the driver to get 3d and restarting the desktop the system sticks or crashes on the logon page.I have
reconfigured Xserver-xorg twice now with the same result after re-enabling the drivers so cannot figure out what to do next.Should I try the legacy drivers instead?
    Help---anyone please
