x display issues running avi or mpeg with docking station

guys using ubuntu 6.10. With my dell c610c laptop in the docking bay and a crt screen I cant see video when playing on a player such as totem, mplayer, vlc etc. All I get is a black screen with sound. The laptop out of the doc using the lcd screen works fine. I was thinking this may have been a xorg.config issue..... any I deas?
