Well, if you use redhat, the programm switchdesk might come in handy!
but, manually, you can ex. do this to start xfce:
or kdeCode:echo "exec startxfce" > $HOME/.xinitrc
Code:echo "exec startkde" > $HOME/.xinitrc

What display manager do you use (the display manager is the program that allows you to log in to whatever desktop environment you're using)? If you're using gdm, check under the "Session" menu to see if xfc is listed.
