bash on desktop background
I see screenshots of peoples' linux system and see that they have what appears to be the command prompt on their background without a window! I also see shots where it is their irc chats,
I seem to recall a way to do this in kde...but i don't know...I'd appriciate any thoughts

Basically they will have a shell open that is set to some level of transparency. The decorations would be turned off (Not sure how to do this on KDE, but i know you can setup a keyboard shortcut on fluxbox). With this, this would be how they would appear to have it on the background. It's basically a shell that's opened that's made such that u can barely see the shell, but obviously can see the text on it.

press Alt+F2 and type Kcontrol.
Desktop -- Window Behavior -- Translucency.
play with its options.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
