Fatal Error: No Screens
Crash course in Linux!!!
I am new to Linux/Unix systems. I am trying to make the change from Windows XP to Linux on my personal computer and have had a few problems. I have downloaded the KNOPPIX live DVD distribution and the Debian distribution. I have a newer computer, and apparently X Windows has some issues with my video card. KNNOPPIX works, but X Windows has a problem loading, then it fixes itself.
Debian gives me a fatal error of "No screens found", and I have to do everything via command prompt. I have been reading some on how to fix this error, and have tried a few things that people have suggested to others on forums with no success (reinstall, reconfigure, etc). I want to install the update, but don't know how because it won't recognize my thumb drive in the /media folder. When I enter a CD it won't let me see the files with the 'ls' command. I downloaded the updates (ALL of them) from the website, but I don't know how to install it (or what to install, there are over 2000 files - http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/X11R7.2/src/). If anyone knows what to do or has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
I believe I have an ATI card.
Welcome to the LinuxForums.
did you try to install ATI driver? did you try 'vesa' driver? 'vesa' is a generic driver and works fine with most of cards.
