fluxbox + idesk experience

I'm writing this post because I have recently reinstalled gentoo on my laptop and decided I would go with something a little more minimalist (had gnome last time) so I tried fluxbox. I tried fluxbox before but it was only half-hearted.

Well I have to say I really really like fluxbox now that I've figured out how to set background, use idesk for icons, and edit menu. I also have torsmo running as a daemon and my computer is faster then ever. So this basically is an opinion post but I thought it might be helpful for those of you who have thought about diverging from the main wm (gnome; kde) but thought it might be too much work/harm...etc. It only took me about two hours to install, configure, and have a running nice sleek looking fluxbox with background, menu configured, icons, and system monitor daemon.

So if anyone else knows any other tips, tricks, ideas, suggestions, or experiences with fluxbox please let me know. Or if anyone has any questions as to how I set stuff up I will give links and directions that basically anyone could follow and have a nice minimalist wm setup in a relatively short time.

If you're just looking for opinions, I really like fluxbox as well. I ran it for awhile on my FreeBSD box and then switched back to KDE for a (silly) reason: I frequently copy and paste from a terminal, and xterm is way too clunky for that. I ran Konsole from fluxbox, but it took forever to start since it is a KDE app.

So I'm happily back into the KDE world for now. I am assuming you found fluxbox's online documentation, which is very nice and thorough. :)

I actually used a the How-To Fluxbox on the gentoo site which obviously is specifically for gentoo but has information relevant to all distro's. I looked a little at fluxbox wiki type stuff but really didn't need much of. I actually did install a program outside of portage called idesktool for easier configuraton of idesk/icons. It's a quite easy to install and has made using idesk a simpler process.

Instead of using torsmo, which appears not to be developed any longer, try conky. It seems a little better, not as buggy.
