libxml2.so.2

receiving error:
"checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool"
when running ./configure for gnome 2.16.1...libxml2.so.2 exists in the /usr/lib folder
Anyone able to help?

When I enter the above command, I receive:
syntax error at -e line 1, near ");"

STUCK and feeling useless....
