Memory problem with xfree86
Hello, I am trying to get Linux working and working with Linux (after several failed attempts), by now all have been quite easy and it works almost ok (thanks debconf). But I have this problem with Xfree86: cant get it to work above 640x480 at 16bit color.
In Windows, the screen have the following modes: 24bit=1024x768,800x600,640x480; 16bit=800x600,640x480; and 8bit, 640x480.
Now if I start X at 16bit, it gives me the 640x480 mode, claiming that at 800x600 there is "insufficient memory given virtual size". I can get 800x600 at 8bit ; also, I can not get a virtual of 800x600 at 16bit in 640x480.
Things I have done:
-- Increased VideoRam to 2 megs, result: it works but the screen "melts", it displays it very weird.
-- Changed the hsync and vrefresh rates with several different numbers, didnt work.
-- Upgraded from XF86 4.3 to 4.4: nada.
-- Specified modelines in XF86config: again nothing.
-- Tried another card (S3Virge): zero.
-- Crawled the entire web, including this site: tried some of the quasi-solutions, the above said among them, with same results.
Am I missing something? Anyone has maybe at least a clue of what should I do or where to go, what direction should I take? I will be very grateful of any advice an input. Many thanks in advance,
