This isn't really a 'sidebar', but GDesklets do a pretty good job with monitors. You may also want to look at conky and gkrellm; they may fit your tastes better. I'm also sure that there's a gnome applet for the panel(s) that displays the information you need.

A low-res set of monitors is displayed in xosview. I usually install that as one of the first things I do. I found conky to install very easily on Debian-related systems (e.g. Xandros), but troublesome on RedHat (e.g. CentOS). However, I could not get Conky to work well on an SMP system -- but that was likely unfamiliarity on my part. I like gkrellm a lot .. cheers, drl
