Can any please tell me the difference betwen Kate and KWrite? I first thought that Kate was like Notepad and KWrite was like Wordpad. Apparently that's not true, but then I fail to understand what's the difference between Kate and KWrite.
If both Kate and KWrite are pure text editors, then is there any default Rich Text editor for KDE?

Kate is basically a combination of the features found in Kedit and Kwrite, both were missing core features but exclusively contained other features in their own right. Kate combines all the features of Kwrite and Kedit as well as providing things like multiple window capabilities, and the side-pane file manager.
As for rtf supported editors, I don't know of any off the top of my head.
OpenOffice.org Writer has RTF support.
I don't use KOffice, but one their editor may do RTF as well.
The way I think of Kate and KWrite is that Kate is a Programmer's Editor and KWrite is more Notepad / Wordpad-esque. I really don't use KWrite often; I'm pretty happy with just Kate.

AbiWord does the rtf
Kate also allows for a console (shell) window so as you write your c or java code, you can compile it and test/debug/curse it.
I guess KDE's rtf would be KWord. I used it back before I got into GNOME, but now use AbiWord.
Kate also allows for multiple documents to be opened, and has a basic 'project manager'. A lot of the plugins now are the same, so I can see why without using additional functionality they appear the same.
