IS IT WORTH installing FreeBSD on a workstation home PC?

Want to learn some BSD world, have the experience with Gentoo.
However people used to say *BSD distros, as unises, are bad choice as a home workstation because of some overhead with running typical desktop programs like: Firefox, OpenOffice, StarDict, Opera, ThunderBird, Skype, KMplayer etc.

What do you think on the issue?

Alot of people say things bad about something, but it is there personal preference.
For instance I believe that onions are evil little things and should only be used for baseball practice.
Other people think they taste good. Only you can decide what is good for your situation.

However is there any special overhead running above mentioned applications?
Would you recommend FreeBSD as a home or laptop workstation?

How would you compare it to i.e. Gentoo in this respect?

I tried PC-BSD aling time ago and don't remember any "special overhead".
Never tried FreeBSD, but, I know there are lots of people who do.
And if there were problems I suspect the developers would work on it.
Do you have anything to lose by trying it out?

I installed FreeBSD, PC-BSD, GhostBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD. Nothing in particular, the average OS. A lot of work around installation, weight problems at work. Nothing special.
