Generally,
FreeBSD = performance
OpenBSD = security
NetBSD = portability
Those are extreme generalizations though. FreeBSD is probably the best for a BSD newbie. But go to each of the BSDs website to learn more. Just <name of BSD>.org
And yes, BSD is a drug
