Well, after much frustration I finally just gave up and changed mice. I bought a Kensington PilotMouse (wired) and magically all my buttons and scroll wheel work. One day when I'm bored again I might pull out the MX700 and give it another go. For now I'm just happy to have everything working. (On a side note, 3D acceleration works now too.)
