You have to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf's Screen section:
In the DefaultDepth subsection, add on Modes the resolutions you want. The first one gets priority.Code:Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen 1" Device "* Generic VESA compatible" Monitor "My Monitor" DefaultDepth 16 ... Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ViewPort 0 0 EndSubsection EndSection

If that doesnt work, try uncommenting the vertical and horizontal sync lines, that worked for me.
