Did you configure your Xserver before running "startx"? Did you install a GUI and add commands to execute it in your ~/.xinitrc?

Did you enter the specs for your monitor and video card when xorgconfig was run, if so it may need some tweaking. If you are not getting anything follow daark child's suggestions for the .xinitrc file.
