Running Fedora 11 on a i845e/P4 northwood machine with GF6800 and Audigy2 sound card.

Every once in a while after rebooting a pop up will tell me that audio hardware was removed from the system, and it's referring to Audigy2 side speakers. There is an option to forget about those devices permanently.

What I don't understand is, why was that device detected in the 1st place and why the system thinks it was removed, even though there was no change to hardware on the box or to kernel and software.

I am just using the machine to read web, emails and to place Skype calls.

Some updates were installed, but it was never a coincidence that a pop-up would come after a reboot after updates were installed. It is absolutely random. I reboot this machine often, as I am trying to compile a custom kernel, which is not working so I am constantly falling back onto the kernel which came with the very 1st update after install, which is 2.6.30.9-96-fc11.i686.PAE

It is also weird that before I reinstalled Fedora onto the new hdd I just bought, I ran it for a while in exactly same configuration, but back then Skype allowed me to select among Pulse audio and several physical interfaces in its Audio options tab. Now I only have Pulse audio there. It still works, just looks different and it took me a long while to find proper mixer channel set up to make Pulse audio capture from the microphone during the Skype calls.

It's kind of important to have Skype working, so I would like to understand how to properly set up multimedia on this box if god forbid I have to reinstall Fedora again.

Sorry for a long post
Thx!

Hello, everyone.

I need help. I cannot find a multimedia linux distro that will work on my Laptop. I have seen a few promising distro's, such as dyne;bolic, but that does not seem to work on my Laptop. Also, when will Chainsaw linux be finished, it looks like a very impressive multimedia distro.

My Laptop is a compaq CQ61 with 4gb memory, 500gb HDD and 2.16GHz Intel pentium T3400 Proccessor, if that makes a difference.

Thanks:p

Hey folks,
I finally sold my soul and bought an ipod (my discman broke, and I miss having portable music)
However, I can't get it to work with my system. I'm using xubuntu with Gnome, and the version is Jaunty. First I tried Rhythmbox, which loads it fine, but I can't put any files on the ipod. When I do a right-click and "new playlist" in the ipod, Rhythmbox closes.
Next, I tried gtkpod, which doesn't have support for my ipod (3rd Gen Shuffle, 4GB, black), so no help there.
Banshee did the same thing as Rhythmbox (wouldn't let me put anything on it), and iTunes doesn't work with Wine.
I tried running Windows with VBOX, but of course I needed an actual install disc, which I don't have.
I connected it to a friend's computer (running Vista), formatted it and added music through that, but even after it was formatted, I couldn't get Rhythmbox to work with it.
I feel like I need to re-format it for Linux (?) but I don't know how.

I also considered running a Windows emulator, but don't know of any good ones (suggestions?)

So basically, I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Obviously the audio part of the Linux is the worst part of the entire system.
I'm trying to have a real audio experience on Linux since 4 years, but I think that day will never dawn. Why there's no possibility to have an all in one kernel for all purposes? I'm using a wide range of applications. My favorite would be Ardour. But it is based on a farting called jack. I had to see how people are putting their efforts into developing something like PulseAudio, which is 0% needed and useful and at the same time leaving xruns from kernels untouched. I'm getting convinced that a Linux kernel is the worst piece of software ever written. I love Linux, but how on earth can it happen, that a crippled OS like Windows has a perfect audio system, with no real-time issues, no overruns, and other ********s so characteristic for Linux. What is the point in monolithic kernel, if we have to bow before the PC if its audio system works normally? Can somebody explain me why is audio so bad?
Please, don't tell me "You should use UbuntuStudio, ..." for audio purposes. This answer is simply not acceptable. Should I install for each task a separate OS?
A Linux for graphics, another for music creation, a third one for office...
I even would help develop some applications, but it seems to me, that the kernel itself is sick. Any Linux audio professional here?

Intel Celeron-D 2.66 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
Audigy 2

That would make rock'n roll on Windows!

I am getting slightly (not bad but noticeable none the less) distorted audio on playback. At first I thought it might be simply the small speakers on this laptop but its present using good quality headphones as well so its obviously the audio output itself. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and this happens with both Rhythmbox and Banshee.

OK I know you cant tell me what's wrong based on the brief info above. But how do I start to to track problem down? Is there anything I should check, enter code into terminal to get more info? Or check installed libs etc. So where do I start?

Thanks

i recenly installed yamagi quake 2 (native linux version) and heretic 2 (trough wine) on my opensuse 11.

i would like to run theese games on 1400x1050 but there is no such resolution there.
i figured this wont be as easy as with quake 1 or 3.
i looked around and found that maybe i need some custom opengl renderer?

if anyone succeeded running theese games at custom resolution please tell.

also the sound in my quake is really weird, like the bass would be tuned up very high, looks like its using OSS instad of ALSA, any way to fix that?

I have tried un-installing and then re-installing the program but there is no change. along with the audio/dvd player. I understand the dvd player needs added
plugins so as to not to upset copyright laws. I have already tried to add VLC -
opened a terminal and typed in this

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd

Although VLC is listed in Applications/sound & video - not a lot happens...
As a newbie you'll have to explain everything in detail.

Thanks very much
