How do I remove all traces of an uninstalled application?

I accidentally installed the wrong version of VMware (Workstation v7)and I need to remove it completely so I can install an earlier version (Workstation v6.5) because my license key for 6.5 doesn't work in v7

I followed the instructions to uninstall VMware Workstation 7 and now when I try to install v6.5, it hangs while trying to configure stage of the install.

I'm thinking I need to remove all of VMware WS v7's leftovers and start fresh

I've tried multiple times reinstalling, uninstalling, re-uninstalling and re-reinstalling every way I know how......Does anyone know how I can go about doing this?

Thanks,

<quote>K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features like audio track extraction or audio transcoding or ISO9660 image creation.</quote>

What is missing from my permissions?

<quote># ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw-rw-+ 1 root disk 11, 0 Nov 16 23:25 /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root disk 11, 0 Nov 16 23:25 sr0</quote>

Interesting. The permissions morphed:

<quote># egrep '^disk' /etc/group
disk:x:6:bkorb</quote>

but it should be okay. Why is this made so difficult to use? Sure, if I were installing a departmental server, but we're talking about my personal work station. It should not take hours and hours and hours and hours to set up.
By the way, SuSE won't let you add the "disk" group via the GUI interface.
It is not listed in the groups you can use. "vi /etc/group" worked fine, but
still, K3b absolutely refuses to allow me to burn a CD on my work station.

I am new here and new to Linux as well and am needing some help.

I have fooled around with Ubuntu but because of mounting issues, I went back to Windows.

I received a free computer Thursday.Dual core P4, 1.28 gigs ram,2x 80gig satas in RAID1..It was free so I'm not complaining. During initial install of openSuse the bootloader would not install. I tried Ubuntu and upon restart I got a black screen with no prompt. Finally I said screw it and took Raid off for the fact that I was thinking it was screwing stuff up.

Finally got openSuse installed but only one hard drive is showing up..

Have a 1tb external formatted with Apples filesystem that I can only read from. I need read/write permissions and can't establish them. I heard that because it is in HSF, I'm prolly gonna have to reformat but I don't have the space to do it.

Would appreciate the help and thanks for who-ever does help.

I just managed to finish installing opensuse 11.2 on my laptop.
I have a ATI FireGL V5700 graphics card, and I'd like to install the official driver for this.

Does anyone know where I could find the driver, because ATI's webpage doesnt seem to list the card.

I tried downloading the catalyst 9.10 driver, and following the instructoins given here en,opensuse,org/Howto/ATI_Driver (I put commans instead of fullstops as the site doesnt allow me to post links) under the heading the "command-line way". Sadly after selecting the suse packages in the script, it asked me to choose one of the items under that option. I didn't know what to pick exactly, so I picked opensuse 112 IA32. I am assuming that means 11.2 intel architecture, but I'm not sure..

Sadly I got an error and was not able togenerate the distro specific package.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong??

Okay newbie question. I need to configure a gateway box for my company. I will use it as a gateway for some users and services and a failover gateway for others. I will need to add the following.

Firewall – ability to block and open ports
NAT – I need to route some public IPs to private, one will be through a switch over a router to another network.
Unlimited internet access to a group of internal IP addresses.
A couple of static routes

My question is what is the best flavor of Linux to use that is the most stable and easiest to configure? I took the distro test and they recommend OpenSuSE so I am posting it here but I do not know if OpenSuSe is the best for this. Also please let me know of any links or posts on how to configure this. I am sure I can search the forums for each process but if anyone has shortcuts I am all for it.
Thanks in advance.

Folks,
Hi. New to the forums and Linux.
I need to buy a new/used laptop. My Dell Inspiron has served me well for 7 years [and 3 HDDs] running 16 hours a day minimum. Apparently parts for my Dell are next to impossible to get now. I've read and heard that the quality of Dell died after Michael left a few years ago. Even though he returned I'm still not sure of the quality. There seem to be MANY used Dells on the market which begs the question, 'why?'
For consistently high build-quality IBM apparently can't be beat. They were always too expensive but remanufactured seems to be a viable option for me. I don't play games, but I surf the net ALL THE TIME. I've used Firefox for years but never Linux.
I'd like to have something in duo core for 64-bit Linux on my new laptop. Any suggestions for older, affordable IBM models that have duo core? I understand a Google search to find used/remanufactured computers is easy but haven't found anything that fits my needs and wallet [$700 max]. Maybe you all know about some model that I haven't found. I live in MX and there's a Lenovo factory, but their prices are still IBM insane.
As far as Linux distro to use, Suse seems to have the best hardware support. Although I don't like their deal with Windows. I'm trying to get away from Bill Gates.
As I have been a Windows user for so long, are there any programs when surfing/using multimedia on the net, that aren't supported by something 'similar' in Linux? I've used Abiword with limited success. Could be Windows conflicts or something. I don't know.
Well, that's enough for now. Thank you in advance for any help.
