Downloaded Live CD last night, of Mandriva One.

When it boots, it gives me a HUGE dialog box, that takes up a major portion of the screen's real-estate, and the font is about 10x too large. I can see a truncated word/sentence, a Cancel button (functional), and an OK button, greyed out.

Nowhere am I given an opportunity to confirm the correct screen has been chosen, nor am I presented any options.

Any suggestions?

My hardware is:
I use a standard Toshiba Satellite - A100-VA7
it's a core2duo from a few years back, 2GB RAM, Centrino chipset.
I don't know much about the graphics card... aside that it's a 15.4", 1280-800

I have a pretty "normal" notebook, a Toshiba A100-VA7 Satellite,
core2duo, Centrino chipset. 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 1280x800 15.4" LCD.
It's really nothing exotic.
here is an excerpt from LSPCI:

I just read a comment on a Linux distro calling it "bloated". It just happened that the distro was Mandriva and I had to laugh. So many people forget that Linux is highly configurable so its as light or "bloated" as you want it.

For example:

I just happen to have Mandriva 2009.1(WMII window manager) running on a P2 with 250Mb/RAM and it works fine

Hi all,

Please excuse me if this doesn't make sense as I'm new to Linux and am still trying to learn it.

Ages ago I downloaded and installed Mandriva Linux 2009.0 (One) from the Mandriva website. I absolutely love it, but whenever I log-in, I get this little blue icon appear in the task-bar (near the clock) which tells me that a new version is available. I always double-click on it which brings up the following box:

'New version of Mandriva Linux distribution

A new version of Mandriva Linux distribution has been released.
More Information about this new version.
Do you want to upgrade to the 2009 Spring distribution?
[ ] Do not ask me next time
[ Cancel ] [ Next ] '

Anyway, I always click on 'Next' which brings up a bigger 'New version of Mandriva Linux distribution' box but everything inside it is grey and it can literally stay on the screen for days. The aforementioned box still stays on the screen to the side of it.

Is there any way that I can update to the new Linux without having to download it off the Mandriva website and burn it to CD? I was hoping that I'd be able to just update through the update utility, as I'm particuarly interested in Mandriva 2010 when it's released.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Stu :)

Greetings

I use ECHOLINK a windows program (ham radio VOIP) in conjunction with WINE (Not a windows emulator) on the 2009 edition of MANDRIVA.
The software works perfectly, but for some reason I cannot port forward mandriva.
I have both turned off the firewall altogether and also tried to specify the actual UCD and TCP ports to allow access, neither has worked.

I have also set the router to allow these ports also, but the port checker I use (from ECHOLINK) says that the ports are not open or even contactable.

any thoughts?

I have a satellite connection and use the router to allow my voip phone to connect with teh modem as well.

Thanks
