I've been trying my hardest to migrate from WinXP to a linux distro this week. While getting some distros installed wasn't a real problem (as in not harder than expected **cough**Gentoo**cough**), I have not been able to get Wine to run World of Warcraft at anything approaching 'playable'.

Distros tried (issue experienced)
Gentoo 10 amd64 (wine not displaying login screen for WoW)
KUbuntu 9.10 64bit (bootup locks on ACPI) -- will try again though
Fedora 12 64bit (bypassed ACPI, better looking login screen for WoW, but no graphical background, unable to interact with login field or buttons)
Fedora 12 32bit (same as above. tried switching to NVidia's proprietary driver via EasyLife, but desktop became completely unusable)

So what I think I'm looking for is:

Binary distro - I'm tired of source compiles

Proprietary NVidia driver - or at least easy to switch to

CVS wine build

I know this can be done in just about any distro (there are even binary versions of Gentoo), but is there any distro that is aimed at running Windows-based games? I have a long but broken history with Linux use (since Redhat 5.x), and I'm willing to try just about any distro at this point.

I have installed Moneysoft Payroll under Wine on Ubuntu 9.04. It works really well - until I come to use it to send a form to the tax office over the internet. It validates the data - then can't access the Internet. Is there anything I need to set up in Wine to let the program access the internet? I presume it uses Winsock, and I thought Wine emulated Winsock. Anyone?

Hi all,

I am new to Linux platform.

Currently I wrote a program and put it in fedora. I tried to run it with wine. However I got error message:
Run time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object.

I know that there are some missing ddl files that are needed by my program. But I don't know how to make it as what we try to register a dll inside system32 in windows.

I saw the system32 inside my Wine File and there are many .dll/.ocx files located inside. I downloaded the needed .dll file but I don't know how to add it into the system32.

Can anybody help me to solve this problem?

Hello all. I'm running Eeebuntu NBR 3.0 on a 1005HA laptop, and I'm trying to make a wine launcher to Foxit Reader, and it does absolutely nothing when I have the file in my wine Program Folders, but does just fine if I make a launcher to the program when it is elsewhere. The launcher target I am using is as follows.

Code:

wine /home/kit/.wine/dosdevices/c:/"Program Files"/Foxit/Foxit.exe

I was looking at wine launchers for programs and I'm not sure what's wrong with this. The command works correctly when run from my terminal but not from the launcher. Thank you much.
