Problems with gnome-login configuration

Hi everybody,

Last night I started my computer and loaded my CentOS 5.2 partition (Windows 7 on the other partition). I was able to login to my account, but was given a gnome error that the panel buttons (i.e. weather, cpu monitor etc) could not be loaded. I then went to restart the computer (probably not the smartest thing to do) and was given some file errors upon shutdown that were related to /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00. After restart I was taken to a shell and ran fsck manually. It seemed to find a lot of bad blocks, so I repaired the /dev/VolGroup00 system and restarted.

At this point CentOS seemed to boot normally, but upon loading of the login screen I get the error:

Configuration not correct
The configuration file contains an invalid command line for the login dialog, so running the default command. Please fix your configuration.

I cannot even log in as root. I get the error /usr/bin/gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libgnome-desktop-2.so.2: cannot open shared objects file: no such file or directory. I then went to a shell and ran: sudo yum install libgnome-desktop-2.so.2, but the package was already installed and up to date, so there was nothing to do.

I am therefore stuck at this login screen with pull-down menus and tabs where I can change the configuration, add/remove users etc. So, my question is this:

How do I restore my user profile so I can login....and if anyone has some insight, what caused this to happen in the first place?

I should also mention, this all happened after plugging the computer into a new internet connection. No clue if that's even relevant.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice you can give.

Jason

My computer is 2x 64 ADM with 4 Megs of ram on a acer laptop
Currently I am running windows home premium. The salesman talked me into an extra 2 Megs of ram. It was not until later that I found out I was only using 32bits and 2megs. I would like to take advantage of my hardware.

In the past I tried installing umbuntu on some older machine and had trobule with installing drivers. Then I came across gos and it has been running better than anything I have seen on my older machines. I wanted to install it on my acer but wanted to make sure it would be the best fit.

I mostly work with tons of tabs open in my browser
need to go back and forth from windows and Linux like tab browsing if possible
Use both 64bit processor and all 4megs of ram
I use the computer for internet marketing and would love to hear you ideas. I really love gos but want to know if this is the best for my top machine

Hi.
Just started with Damn Small Linux and still trying to find my way around. I've been experimenting with run levels, moving from the default 5 to 3 and to 2. Now I have the situation that, whatever level I choose, /cdrom/ is seen as a read only device, although it is mounted over hda1. This shows both at boot time (error messages appear as the system boots) and at shutdown where I can no longer backup as the error /cdrom//backup.tar.gz: Cannot open : Read only file system is logged in the /tmp/backup_status file. (yes the error does have two // in it?)

How do I return it all to its previous friendly state, please?

Thanks

Anyone for Crux Linux here...?

Hi Forum,

Hi Forum,

This is my first post her, so Greetz to all of you gents... :-)

I may be new to Crux, but not to Linux in general, started may years ago with RHEL4 x64 /Fedora, jumped to OpenSUSE/CentOS, then came the Buntus, and now i have two workstations in my Lab ( I am an aerospace engineer, most of the apps that I use are non-commercial software compiled from source, and are real RAM/CPU hogs, I do a lot of 3D modelling, F.E.A., C.F.D, Genetic optimization, and mathematical prototyping of control systems (design/analysis) ) with FreeBSD Current, and CaeLinux, and two Lappies, one with Slackware64 1
3 ( great distro btw ) and the other with Debian Lenny 64...

So... i kinda' know my way around... but being new to Crux, I want to ask a few questions... :

#1) I want to install Crux to an external USB HDD in one of the lappies, I wont have a wired internet connection to do so, so after installing the packages, and compiling my kernel, will I be able to enable X, wireless and some other basic stuff...?

( I have already tinkered a bit with Arch, and I did this after wget(ting) the whole repos core, contrib, and base to a folder and building my own local repo, but Arch is binary based.... while Crux is ports based... think this approach wont work w/ Crux...)

#2) Is there a package repo for Crux, that will allow me to install a binary package without having to compile it from source... ( I can compile rather large packages, and I have already done so in Slackware, and I prefer doing so in very resource intensive applications ( I generally compile them with Intel C++ and Fortran compilers, and Math Kernel Libraries support) ) but building something like Gnome from source is a bit of a lengthy adventure... :-)... in FreeBSD there is the pkg_add -r <whatever> which will fetch and install what you want... is there something alike in Crux...?

#3) How does Crux ( I am considering to use the german version w/ 64 bits from Ecarux ://ecarux.de/crux86_64/]crux86_64) compare with Slackware and Arch in terms of speed of execution and RAM Footprint

...Slackware once fine tuned is hard to beat.... :-)

Hi

I am trying to extract an invisible tar file, getting child returns error 2.

So now I just wanna drag & drop the drivers in their respective file folders.

I know that I have the latest Kernel, [sigh] an I realy need the Attansil12 driver for LAN. NOT the L2. So knowing it is part of the kernel, how do I locate the file folder where the l1 driver lives ?

Also, where would I find the same/ equivelent for my WAN driver ?

They are both now "Guarded" by Atheros Dot Com

I have the drivers sitting on my pen drive.

I use DreamLinux 3.5 [on this one, 2.2 MMGL on others or 3.0] and am not able to detect the drivers out of the box on this laptop. [worked fine the first time on my friends Dell D600 I just set up for him].

I have a e Machines E 625 [ now rebranded as an Acer AS5516-5474] and I tried the lspci command and I tried to restart wicd.
On the LAN side, my card is visible an DreamLinux tells me the needed driver, but wicd Manager output screen does not see it, as there is no listing such as "eth0 or eth1".
I tried typing in the modems address [68.94.156.1 & 68.94.157.1] an tried the Global DNS Settings, both as static and not in "Preferences" on wicd Manager.
I tried several bother commands, but no luck.
=====

on the wan side, I have tried much less, but the wan0 shows up where it should on wicd restart.

I went to wicd . org and read about the bug these have, but it does not seem to apply to my particular situation. [sigh] Sooo much to read, then dead end.

Clue: My drivers on Win Vista just stopped working mysteriously too. I was darn sure that the card had died. I reinstalled the driver, and presto, both wan and lan work in windowzz. So perhaps I ruled out a hardware problem, eh ?

It was my dumb luck that the attnsic card/ driver was part of the linux kernel.

I tried the tar -xzvf Command in Terminal, but the file am physically looking at isn't visble to Archive Manager: No such file, child returned error 2, Status: something or other, not recoverable.
Gosh how annoying.

I realise you have heard this q like a million times, so before I posted I googled variations of the 'error 2 message' but no on has yet written a tutorial on what to do when you have an obviously existing tar file in your /opt folder and it is invisible to Archive Manager.

When this is resolved, I will write just that.:D

Any help ?

Thanks!

Hello all! First off I would like to say im new to this forums but not to linux in general, I have Ubuntu Karmic running on my machine and I am very active on the ubuntu forums so I THINK im not a complete noob, but Im still rookie in linux terms:rolleyes:.

My problem regarding my laptop (Acer Aspire 5810TZ). I got Damn Small Linux (DSL) running on my USB drive without any problem, BUT, NONE of my network cards are working under DSL, its pretty weird because I have read everywhere that my type of card is recognized and configured "out of the box"

They both work in ubuntu like a charm so I figured that I could just see the driver that my Ubuntu installation is using and put the very same driver on DSL, problem is I dont know how to do it. Hence the laptop has not internet connectivity I cannot download packages or compile software because I dont have the build-essential installed or things like that.

I want it to work on the laptop because thats where I would install the MyDSL extensions and tweak the system to my needs, so I really need the help.

lspci recognizes the devices like this:

Code:

- Network Controller [0280] Atheros Communications Inc. Unknown Device [168c:002a] (rev01)

- Ethernet Controller [0200] : Attansic Technology Corp, Unknown Device [1969:1063] (rev c0)

However, ifconfig doesnt show the devices, it just shows the loopback interface.

I tried loading this:

Code:

modprobe ath_pci

its suppossed to work right after I do this, but still the devices does not show on ifconfig.

Atheros chipset for wireless is AR928X.

If you need any other thing just let me know. Thanks in advance for the help.

PS: Wireless is critical that works, the other not so much but would be nice to get it working too.

We have a Sun Cobalt Qube 3 internet/e-mail server. On this server you can make a group (like guest-share) which can be mounted in WinXP as a networkdisk. So all clients can access this share with their file explorer.

Yesterday I received an email that one person could not access a certain file in a certain folder. It seems to have to do something with the long pathname (above 256 characters) but I didn't knew that at that time. The only thing I could think of where permissions which were wrong on that share. So what I did was a telnet session (from my home) and as su the command:

chmod -R 755 \guest-share\

After this all files where 755. But....the next day I was called that all files where deleted. They could only see the folder names but the files were gone. So I looked and it seems that when I used the explorer I didn't see the files. But with Commander (which also shows hidden files) it seems that all files were changed to the attributes archive hidden and system. I can't change these attributes with explorer of windows commander. It simply doesn't work.

How can I make all file visible again so that everyone can access these files again?

Hi all,

I recently had to remove a hard drive to make room for a new video card. Upon putting the hard drive back in and rebooting into CentOS (v5.3 64-bit), I get the error:

fsck.ext3: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda5
****An error occured during the filesystem check.
****Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
****when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance

sda5 is my linux partition, where sda1 is the vista side. I was able to boot into Vista and use Dell's matrix software to restore the raid array. However, upon booting into CentOS I get that error.

I tried running fsck on dev/sda5 but it returns a message saying that it is already in use by another program (which isn't possible, as far as I know). I should also mention that this is a software raid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerly,

Jason
